Pfizer, the maker of Viagra, said Thursday it has approved the sale of its erectile dysfunction medication, Levitra, to U. S. regulators.
The new marketing authorization for the erectile dysfunction drug is the latest effort by Pfizer to broaden its scope of sexual dysfunction and relax its rules about which drugs are approved for erectile dysfunction, the company said in a statement.
The move is part of Pfizer’s effort to create a drug that would be the most appropriate for men who have not found it difficult to get an erection. The company said it also had received approval from the U. Food and Drug Administration for the drug, Levitra, from the company for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men.
Pfizer, which has more than $2 billion in annual sales, said it had received approval for the drug from the U. agency.
Levitra was the only approved drug for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in the United States, and it is being marketed in more than 80 countries.
The drug is sold as Vardenafil, the generic name for the active ingredient in Levitra. It has not been approved for use by the U. Food and Drug Administration for sale, Pfizer said in a statement.
The drug is currently available under a variety of brand names including Viagra, Cialis and Staxyn.
Pfizer and the company are seeking FDA approval to market the erectile dysfunction drug in countries including Australia, Canada and Mexico.
Pfizer will begin selling the drug in the U. in a month’s time. In December, the company said it planned to launch the drug in Japan in a few months.
In the U. S., the drug is marketed under the brand name Viagra and the drug’s brand name Cialis. It is not expected to be available in more than 80 countries.
Pfizer will continue to market the drug in the U.
Pfizer said it is “reviewing” the regulatory approval process for the drug and has determined that it cannot be marketed in the U. for more than six months.
In May, Pfizer said it planned to launch Levitra in the U. in two weeks.
The drug is available for sale in the U. through Pfizer’s website, www.pfizer.com, or via a prescription from a doctor.
The drug’s generic name is Levitra, which is similar to Stendra, a medication developed by Bayer AG.
Pfizer has not commented on its sales figures. Pfizer is not required to publicly share sales data with Reuters.

Pharmaceutical companies are taking an aggressive step after French health officials said a generic version of Pfizer's Viagra was on the market, and its manufacturer has now sold the pill on the pharmacy's shelves, after being marketed as a more effective alternative to Viagra, despite the warnings.
Pharmaceuticals are typically cheaper and often available for lower prices, but they're not without risks, which will impact the pharmaceutical industry's image in Europe.
"We are going to continue to defend Viagra," the French health officials said in an interview.
They also said a generic version of Viagra should be available by the end of October.
The European Union has not yet announced any plans to pull the drug, with Pfizer, the world's biggest drug maker, admitting it has not yet decided whether it will continue to sell Viagra, although it has not ruled out that possibility.
The French government said Friday that a generic version of Pfizer's Viagra could still be made, but it has not made a decision yet.
The British company, based in the UK, had planned to sell Viagra to more than 2 million patients in the EU from the year 1998 to 2013, with a total of 3 million prescriptions in Europe.
A European commission spokesman told the Financial Times that it would not comment on the company's planned move.

Viagra costs £4.50 a tablet, compared to £2.88 in the US, according to the drugmaker's website. The European Commission spokesman said the commission was not aware of any specific plans for Viagra. "We have never made any decisions, and we are not aware of any other pharmaceutical decision taken in this regard," he said.
In its statement, Pfizer said Viagra would be available from its pharmacies only in certain EU countries, while generic versions of Viagra have been available in the US, UK and Canada since 1998.
"Viagra is an effective treatment for erectile dysfunction in men, and is a highly effective drug in Europe. We have been assured that the availability of Viagra will allow us to continue to provide our customers with the most cost-effective and effective treatment for erectile dysfunction," the company said in the statement.
The European commission is not expected to make a decision about the availability of Viagra until the end of the year.
Pfizer said it would not comment on Viagra availability until the end of the month.
The German drugmaker has also not decided how to market its generic, despite warnings from the European commission that it has "limited" the availability of its product.
The company said its European subsidiary, which was based in the UK, had been advised by Pfizer to stop selling Viagra. It was due to release its results in November. In December, Pfizer's shares were down 1.1% at $16.20.

Viagra (sildenafil citrate) is the only oral drug approved by the FDA for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men. The drug was originally developed as an anti-depressant and was approved by the FDA in 2003.
Viagra is currently the only drug approved by the FDA to treat erectile dysfunction, and Pfizer Inc. has a patent on the drug that allows it to be used by men who have experienced erectile dysfunction or other impotence problems, in some cases. However, the company is seeking approval to market a generic version of the drug in Canada.
The drug is produced by CVS Health, which sells it as CVS Caremark, which was acquired by Walgreens Inc. in 2003.
The drug’s manufacturer, Eli Lilly and Co., will launch the generic version of Viagra in the United States in September. Pfizer will sell the generic drug in the United States.
“This is the first time we’ve had a generic version of Viagra approved by the FDA for treatment of erectile dysfunction,” said Dr. Lea. “We hope that we can market this to a wide variety of men across the world who may have experienced erectile dysfunction or other impotence problems.”
Viagra is the only drug that the Food and Drug Administration has approved for treating erectile dysfunction in men.
Viagra was the first oral drug to treat erectile dysfunction and is the first oral medication to be approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men. Viagra works by increasing blood flow to the penis, which helps men with erectile dysfunction to have sex. Viagra has a longer half-life than other drugs.
The drug is available by prescription only in the United States.
“We hope that we can market this to a wide variety of men who may have experienced erectile dysfunction or other impotence problems.”
The generic version of Viagra has a generic version that is available as a tablet. Pfizer will also market the generic drug in Canada and, to a lesser extent, in the United States.
Erectile dysfunction is a common problem for men in their 50s, 60s and 70s, according to researchers at the University of British Columbia in Canada. It is most commonly found in men who have difficulty getting or maintaining an erection, or have a condition that causes an inability to obtain an erection.
According to the researchers, 80 percent of men with erectile dysfunction experience some form of impotence problem. The most common problems in men who experience them are impotence, or inability to get or keep an erection.
Other problems include the condition of the penis, Peyronies disease and impotence.
Some of these problems are reversible, and the condition can be treated.
While the causes of erectile dysfunction are not completely understood, researchers believe the underlying cause of the problem may be psychological or a combination of both.
The scientists found that the symptoms of erectile dysfunction, including difficulty getting an erection and the inability to keep an erection, were more common among men who had a higher BMI. The researchers also found that those who were overweight were more likely to have erectile dysfunction.
Men with a family history of erectile dysfunction were about three times more likely to suffer from impotence problems than men without such a family history.
Erectile dysfunction in men is generally more common than in women and, as such, erectile dysfunction problems can occur in a man without any serious medical problems.
